Scout Programs

All of the programs listed below will be available by reservation only. Please contact the
education department to schedule one of our programs; edu@bnhv.org

Program: Textile Artist: Sheep to Shawl
Length: 2 hours
Description: When you see all the colors and textures of fabrics and yarns, do you dream up a
million things to do with them? Come join us, learn about the textile arts and make a project of
your own. Participants in this program will:

● Learn what the words fiber, fabric, and textile mean.
● Learn how raw fiber is turned into yarn, and yarn into fabric.
● Make your own textile to take home.

All Scouts are welcome to attend this program. Participation in this program will meet some of
the requirements for Senior Girl Scouts’ Textile Artist Badge and Boy Scouts’ Textile Merit
Badge.
Cost: $20.00 per Scout $10.00 per Adult

Program: Gardening Basics
Length: 1.5 hours
Description: Where does the food we eat come from? How can I make my own garden,
regardless of where I live? Come find out the answers to these questions and more at our
Gardening Basics Scout Program. Participants in this program will:

● Learn about different ways to garden.
● Visit and learn about our different gardens
● Learn how to choose garden plants.
● Learn about good bugs and bad bugs in your garden.
● Plant your own small container garden to take home.

All Scouts are welcome to attend this program. Participation in this program will meet some of
the requirements for Daisy Girl Scouts’ Welcome to the Daisy Flower Garden Badge, Junior

Girl Scouts’ Gardener Badge, Lion Cub Scouts’ Ready, Set, Grow Badge, and Boy Scouts’
Gardening Merit Badge .
Cost: $20.00 per Scout $8.00 per Adult

Program: Victorian Tea
Length: 2 hours
Description: Come dressed in your best and enjoy an afternoon of leisure. Participants will
learn all about Victorian manners and etiquette while enjoying tea and treats. After the tea party,
we will play some traditional parlor games as well.
All Scouts are welcome to attend this program. Participation in this program will meet some of
the requirements for Junior Girl Scouts’ Social Butterfly Badge.
Cost: $20.00 per Scout $8.00 per Adult

Program: Woodworker
Length: 2 hours
Description: People have been working with wood for centuries. Come learn how early
settlers relied on wood, and visit our Woodwrights Cottage to take a look at the different kinds of
hand tools. Participants in this program will:

● Learn about different basic tools and how to use them safely.
● Use basic hand tools to build a project of their own.

All Scouts are welcome to attend this program. Participation in this program will meet some of
the requirements for Cadette Girl Scouts’ Woodworker Badge, Bear Cub Scouts’ Baloo the
Builder Badge, Webelos/AOL Build It Elective Adventure Badge, and Boy Scouts’ Woodwork
Merit Badge .
Cost: $20.00 per Scout $8.00 per Adult

Program: A Day in the Life
Length: 2 hours
Description: Step back into the past and experience life as a child in the 1800s. Begin with a
tour of some of our historic buildings where we will discuss 19th century life in WNY.
Participants will get a chance to try their hand at some 19th century chores and play some

popular 19th century games. We will conclude the program by making and enjoying a tasty 19th
century treat.
All Scouts are welcome to attend this program. Participation in this program will meet some of
the requirements for Junior Girl Scouts’ Playing the Past Badge.
Cost: $20.00 per Scout $8.00 per Adult
Capacity: 20 youth

Program: Marble Madness
Length: 2 hours
Description: In the 1800s, marble games were quite popular with people of all ages, and
almost every child owned a bag of favorite marbles for playing games both at home and in the
schoolyard at recess. Participants in this program will:
● Learn about the history of marbles.
● Make their own marbles to take home.
● Make a simple marble bag to hold your marbles.
● Learn and play some traditional 19th century marble games.
● Make up a marble game of your own.

All Scouts are welcome to attend this program. Participation in this program will meet some of
the requirements for Brownie Girl Scouts’ Making Games Badge, and Bear Cub Scouts’
Marble Madness Elective Adventure Badge .

Program: All About Me
Length: 1.5 hours
Description: Let’s find out more about your family—the people you love and who love you.
Genealogy has become one of the most popular hobbies in the United States but can be very
confusing for those who do not know where to start. Come visit us and learn about some of the
different genealogical resources available to you. Then create your own All About Me and My
Family book and begin a family tree of your own. Participants in this program will:
● Learn what the words genealogy, ancestor, and descendant mean.
● Learn about different genealogical resources and how to find them.

● Explore your own family story.
● Make your own family tree.

All Scouts are welcome to attend this program. Participation in this program will meet some of
the requirements for Brownie Girl Scouts’ My Family Story Badge and Boy Scouts’ Genealogy
Merit Badge.
Cost: $15.00 per Scout $8.00 per Adult
